The Miniature Earth
Here's a short and eponymous video from Miniature World, with the idea of showing us how the world's population would be configured in line with current proportions, if there were only 100 people inhabiting Earth.
Out of that imaginary group of 100 people, we are told that 9 would be disabled, a staggering 43 would not have access to basic sanitation, and 18 would be without an 'improved water source'.
6 of the 100 would own 59% of all the wealth, whilst on the flip-side, there would be 18 people earning a dollar a day or less, and 45 earning 2 dollars a day or less - which helps explain why, if you have a roof over your head, a bed to sleep in and a cupboard for your clothes, you'd be in most privileged 25% of the world's population.
An appallingly low number of only 7 would have had secondary education - 12 would have a computer, and only 3 would have Internet access - I don't know how accurate these given figures are, but to have 93% of the global population without secondary education tells its own story - I imagine a large proportion of that 93% would be obliged to work from a very young age on extremely low wages, just to try and keep themselves and family from starving to death, or suffering from acute malnutrition.
Although we are often told how overcrowded this planet has become for humans, it's also clear that there is in fact plenty of wealth available to easily accommodate the current global population - at least in terms of there being enough food to eat, somewhere clean and safe to live, along with access to basic health-care and education - but there will be few optimists out there who sincerely believe that any or all of these problems will be solved any time soon by an altruistic human race.
It will be interesting to see whether these figures and proportions change over the years - or whether instead, they will remain pretty much the same, well into the foreseeable future.
